Chapter 5 Discourse , power and access

Abstract Literary discourse analysis — viewed legitimately as a branch of discourse analysis— is a new approach to literature. It involves organizing a class curriculum so that students research a variety of genres of written discourse—for example, formal letters, recipes, stories, or academic reports. But critical discourse analysis runs the risk, having the large and complex apparatus of linguistic description at its disposal, of staring too closely at individual phrases, at a particular instance of nominalization or a specific passive construction. That is, we want to know what sequences of sentences in a discourse can refer to.

Critical discourse analysis is a methodology that enables a vigorous assessment of what is meant when language is used to describe and explain. There is a proliferation of terms within critical discourse analysis which is reflective of the various influences in the development of the methodology. There is however a broadly agreed agenda in these studies;. Texts, language, communication should therefore always be considered in their social context, they both shape and are informed by wider processes within society. In this manner texts do not merely passively report upon the world, but they imbue it with meaning, fabricate it, shape perspectives and call the world into being.
