The invention relates to a process for the preparation of urea from carbon dioxide and ammonia in a urea plant comprising a high-pressure section and at least one recovery section at a lower pressure, an aqueous ammonium carbamate solution being formed in the recovery section s at a lower pressure, which solution is returned to the section having a higher pressure. Such a process for the preparation of urea is common knowledge and is described in for example Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, Vol. A27, , pp A drawback of that process is that in many cases much water is returned along with the ammonium carbamate, a valuable raw material in the preparation of urea. The presence of water has an adverse effect on the position of the equilibrium in the reaction of ammonium carbamate to urea at elevated temperature. The conversion to urea decreases with increasing amounts of water, resulting in decreasing urea production in a urea plant. It is the object of the invention to eliminate the aforementioned drawback.

This is a two step process where the ammonia and carbon dioxide react to form ammonium carbamate which is then dehydrated to urea. In the process, ammonia and carbon dioxide are fed to the synthesis reactor which operates around o C and bar pressure. The reaction mixture containing ammonia, ammonium carbamate and urea is first stripped of the ammonia and the resultant solution passes through a number of decomposers operating at progressively reduced pressures. Here the unconverted carbamate is decomposed back to ammonia and carbon dioxide and recycled to the reactor. The urea solution is concentrated by evaporation or crystallisation, and the crystals can melted to yield pure urea in the form of prills or granules.
