And while the growing demand for minerals and metals provides economic opportunities for resource-rich developing countries and private sector entities alike, significant challenges will likely emerge if the climate-driven clean energy transition is not managed responsibly and sustainably.

What is the role of mining in a sustainable world? What challenges lie ahead, and how is the mining industry responding to meet our demand for minerals as well as our expectations of a sustainable future? This course explores the risks, challenges and opportunities facing the mining industry in the 21st century. You will learn some of the history of the role of minerals in society, and the tension between increasing demand for minerals and a continually evolving global context.

Mining and sustainable development: territorializing the mining industry

The heads of UN member states have now signed on to a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals SDGs , which will be the shared global development framework for the coming generation. Mining companies have the potential to become leading partners in achieving the SDGs. Through their direct operations, mining companies can generate profits, employment, and economic growth in low-income countries.

And through partnerships with government and civil society, they can ensure that benefits of mining extend beyond the life of the mine itself, so that the mining industry has a positive impact on the natural environment, climate change, and social capital.

At the same time, mining companies will be called on to extract with responsibility, produce with less waste, use safer processes, incorporate new sustainable technologies, promote the improved wellbeing of local communities, curb emissions, and improve environmental stewardship.

Mining companies committed to the SDGs will benefit from improved relationships with governments and communities and better access to financial resources; those that fail to engage meaningfully with the SDGs will put their operations at risk in the short and long term. Governments, civil society and other stakeholders can also identify opportunities for shared action and partnership with the industry. Based on interviews with over 60 global experts from industry, civil society, governments, academia, and financial institutions, the report identifies where mining can enhance the positive impacts it has and mitigate the negative impacts across the 17 SDGs.

Success of the SDGs will require unprecedented cooperation and collaboration among governments, non-governmental organizations, development partners, the private sector and communities. The mining sector is well positioned to be a key contributor to this success. Skip to main content. Get the free mobile apps Get the latest news from us on our apps.

Elements ;; 13 5 : — Mineral resources have been used for millennia and are a key to society's development. With the growing importance of new technologies and the energy revolution, questions have arisen regarding the future availability of resources of metals and industrial minerals. In addition to economic considerations, it is essential to reconcile mining activity with environmental protection and to allay the concerns of local populations. This issue of Elements highlights the progressive movement towards an active environmental and societal strategy for sustainably harnessing mineral resources. Shibboleth Sign In.

SDSG is an independent nonprofit research institute advancing best practices for sustainable management of renewable energy and natural resources. In addition, we aim to include as many copies as possible of actual agreements that have been negotiated in different communities, in any language. Australia has developed a framework for CDAs under the Native Title Act, and there is at least one agreement in the public domain.

The Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development Project MMSD was a research project looking at how the mining and minerals sector could contribute to the global transition to sustainable development. This introduction describes what the project set out to do and the process that evolved to accomplish those goals. This page collates all the material previously available from www. All project documents, including the MMSD Working paper Series, final reports, regional reports, project bulletins and workshop notes are available for free download.

Increasingly, society understands that the decarbonising of the global economy and realising the UN Sustainable Development Goals SDGs requires a sustained demand for metals and minerals over the coming decades. This has rightly led to greater scrutiny of where these materials have come from and of whether they are being produced responsibly. Our enhanced Mining Principles define good practice environmental, social and governance requirements for the mining and metals industry.

How can mining contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals?

The mining industry today faces a new set of environmental, social, economic, and political challenges. Despite efforts deployed by companies to improve their sustainable practices, and the proliferation of international initiatives aiming at enhanced sector management governance, mining is again being challenged.
