The Inner Ear
In particular, vestibular paroxysmal positional disorders of peripheral and central origin have been studied. The main criteria for differential diagnosis of these disorders have been determined. Vestibular dysfunction in canalolithiasis and cupololithiasis has been investigated clinically and histologically. Effective therapeutic and prophylactic positional maneuvers of three types have been introduced into clinical practice. They were developed taking into account the anatomical and physiological features of the vestibular system. Videonystagmography VNG gives the possibility of video recording of nystagmus in the directions of semicircular channels vertical, diagonal, horizontal. The vestibular evoked myogenic potential test VEMP is being widely used in clinical practice.
Anatomy and Physiology of the Normal Vestibular System
The vestibular system , in vertebrates , is a sensory system that provides the leading contribution to the sense of balance and spatial orientation for the purpose of coordinating movement with balance. Together with the cochlea , a part of the auditory system , it constitutes the labyrinth of the inner ear in most mammals. As movements consist of rotations and translations, the vestibular system comprises two components: the semicircular canals , which indicate rotational movements ; and the otoliths , which indicate linear accelerations. The vestibular system sends signals primarily to the neural structures that control eye movement ; these provide the anatomical basis of the vestibulo-ocular reflex , which is required for clear vision. Signals are also sent to the muscles that keep an animal upright and in general control posture ; these provide the anatomical means required to enable an animal to maintain its desired position in space. The brain uses information from the vestibular system in the head and from proprioception throughout the body to enable the mammal to understand its body's dynamics and kinematics including its position and acceleration from moment to moment.

The ear can be divided into three parts: the outer ear , middle ear and inner ear. The inner ear is the innermost part of the ear, and houses the vestibulocochlear organs. It has two main functions:. In this article, we shall look at the anatomy of the inner ear — its position, structure, and neurovascular supply. The inner ear is located within the petrous part of the temporal bone.
