Postcolonialism is the critical academic study of the cultural legacy of colonialism and imperialism , focusing on the human consequences of the control and exploitation of colonized people and their lands. More specifically, it is a critical theory analysis of the history, culture, literature, and discourse of usually European imperial power. Postcolonialism encompasses a wide variety of approaches, and theoreticians may not always agree on a common set of definitions. On a simple level, through anthropological study, it may seek to build a better understanding of colonial life—based on the assumption that the colonial rulers are unreliable narrators —from the point of view of the colonized people. On a deeper level, postcolonialism examines the social and political power relationships that sustain colonialism and neocolonialism , including the social, political and cultural narratives surrounding the colonizer and the colonized.

This chapter explores the development, academic institutionalization and critique of postcolonial literature as it has emerged since the mid twentieth century. It considers, first, the significance of attempts to represent colonized peoples, places and cultures from their own standpoint, and addresses the many challenges that postcolonial writers have faced in bringing this material into literary form. It explores the critical reshaping of literary form and literariness in postcolonial writing, as successive generations of writers have searched for ways of bearing witness to the singularity of colonial and postcolonial relations. Post colonialism literature is the literature by people from formerly colonized countries. Postcolonial literature often addresses the problems and consequences of the decolonization of a country, especially questions relating to the political and cultural independence of formerly subjugated people, and themes such as racialism and colonialism. It addresses the role of literature in perpetuating and challenging what postcolonial critic Edward Said refers to as cultural imperialism. Migrant literature and postcolonial literature show some considerable overlap. However, not all migration takes place in a colonial setting, and not all postcolonial literature deals with migration. A question of current debate is the extent to which postcolonial theory also speaks to migration literature in non-colonial settings.

Hassan Ismail Talib. London and New York: Routledge, This book undertakes the introduction of newcomers to the field of postcolonial literary studies and to the complex issues and debates surrounding the thorny question of language. It soon becomes clear to the reader, however, that the book is concerned not with "postcolonial literatures" in their multiple languages, but only with Anglophone literatures. In fact, the book tells a success story about the emergence of English from the lowly status of a marginalized dialect in eleventh-century England to a worldwide lingua franca , under the auspices of British, then American, imperialism. Along the way, the story goes, English overcomes various forms of resistance on the part of writers from subjugated societies who promote their endangered oral languages or continue to write in ones with powerful literary traditions, until it finally takes root in postcolonial societies, where it is embraced by prominent Anglophone writers.

- Espere.
