The Sustainable Development Goals SDGs or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". They are included in a UN Resolution called the Agenda or what is colloquially known as Agenda

We looked at the work of a committee of deputy ministers that the Privy Council Office had tasked to provide that direction and at how well selected departments have incorporated the direction into their strategies. Sustainable development is based on the efficient and environmentally responsible use of natural, human, and economic resources. This includes sustaining our natural resources, protecting the health of Canadians and ecosystems, and improving our quality of life and well-being.

The Concept of Sustainable Development: Definition and Defining Principles

Sustainable development is the organizing principle for meeting human development goals while simultaneously sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services on which the economy and society depend. The desired result is a state of society where living conditions and resources are used to continue to meet human needs without undermining the integrity and stability of the natural system. Sustainable development can be defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability goals, such as the current UN-level Sustainable Development Goals , address the global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. While the modern concept of sustainable development is derived mostly from the Brundtland Report , it is also rooted in earlier ideas about sustainable forest management and twentieth-century environmental concerns. As the concept of sustainable development developed, it has shifted its focus more towards the economic development , social development and environmental protection for future generations.

Elaine Nevin addresses the role of education in achieving sustainable development and explores the relationship between development education DE , education for sustainable development ESD and environmental education EE in an Irish context. This definition acknowledges that while development may be necessary to meet human needs and improve the quality of life, it must happen without depleting the capacity of the natural environment to meet present and future needs. At first it emphasised the environment in development policies but, since , has evolved to encompass social justice and the fight against poverty as key principles of sustainable development. There are two commonly used visualisations of how the various aspects of sustainable development interact: one is of three overlapping circles representing the three pillars of sustainable development - economy, society and environment fig 1. The other shows the economy embedded in society, which in turn is embedded in the environment fig 1. The latter focuses on the central role that the environment plays in human society and in turn in the economy. The underlying concepts of sustainable development are defined by Agenda 21, which is the Action Programme for the 21 st century adopted by governments at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development also known as the Earth Summit in

It seems that you're in Germany. We have a dedicated site for Germany. The World Conservation Strategy published by the mCN recognised the full dimensions of these problems, and introduced the concept of sustainable development, placing the emphasis on the exploitation of natural systems and the use of biological natural resources within limits so that the availability of these resources for use by future generations would not be jeopardised by the current use of them. At this time, the imposition of quotas and the definition of critical loads and environmental standards were suggested as the sorts of instruments necessary to cope with the problems of limited availability of environmental resources. Although the mCN publication did not obtain a high international profile, the idea of policy norms to respect critical loads has become quite widely accepted in the environmental policymaking of Western countries. This has often put the policy agencies in difficult situations.
