How Can We Study the Evolution of Animal Minds?

Clive D. Wynne , Monique A. Flyer Sample chapter. Recommend to library. Paperback - Hardcover - Ebook -

Animal cognition encompasses the mental capacities of non-human animals. The study of animal conditioning and learning used in this field was developed from comparative psychology. It has also been strongly influenced by research in ethology , behavioral ecology , and evolutionary psychology ; the alternative name cognitive ethology is sometimes used. Many behaviors associated with the term animal intelligence are also subsumed within animal cognition. Researchers have examined animal cognition in mammals especially primates , cetaceans , elephants , dogs , cats , pigs , horses , [2] [3] [4] cattle , raccoons , and rodents , birds including parrots , fowl , corvids , and pigeons , reptiles lizards , snakes , and turtles [5] , fish and invertebrates including cephalopods , spiders , and insects. The mind and behavior of non-human animals has captivated the human imagination for centuries. Many writers, such as Descartes , have speculated about the presence or absence of the animal mind.

The philosophical issues that relate to research on animal cognition can be categorized into three groups: foundational issues about whether non-human animals are the proper subject of psychological investigation; methodological issues about how to study animal minds; and more specific issues that arise from within the specific research programs. While the study of animal cognition is largely an empirical endeavor, the practice of science in this area relies on theoretical arguments and assumptions — for example, on the nature of mind, communication, and rationality. While there are arguments against animal minds, the cognitive scientists studying animals largely accept that animals are minded, cognitive systems. As demonstrated by the Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness , many scientists also accept animal consciousness. Many of the research programs investigating particular cognitive capacities in different species raise philosophical questions and have implications for philosophical theories, insofar as they impose additional empirical constraints for naturalistically minded philosophers. Traditional research paradigms in animal cognition are similar to those in human cognition, and include an examination of perception, learning, categorization, memory, spatial cognition, numerosity, communication, language, social cognition, theory of mind or mindreading, causal reasoning, and metacognition.

Animal Cognition is an interdisciplinary journal offering current research from many disciplines ethology, behavioral ecology, animal behavior and learning, cognitive sciences, comparative psychology and evolutionary psychology on all aspects of animal and human cognition in an evolutionary framework. Animal Cognition publishes original empirical and theoretical work, reviews, methods papers, short communications and correspondence on the mechanisms and evolution of biologically rooted cognitive-intellectual structures. The journal explores animal time perception and use; causality detection; innate reaction patterns and innate bases of learning; numerical competence and frequency expectancies; symbol use; communication; problem solving, animal thinking and use of tools, and the modularity of the mind. Issue 1, January Newly published article in Animal Cognition entitled 'Reducing impulsive choice VII: effects of duration of delay-exposure training'. Read More Here.

During the last 50 years, comparative cognition and neurosciences have improved our understanding of animal minds while evolutionary ecology has revealed how selection acts on traits through evolutionary time.

PDF | Following the methods of natural science, research in animal cognition seeks to discover the extent to which our mind might be the final step in the evolution of intellectual when the behavior in question might be more parsimoniously.
