The Anatomy of the Gallbladder
Dler Omer Surgical anatomy and physiology The gall bladder is pear -shaped, 7. The anatomical divisions are: fundus, body, neck and a narrow infundibulum. The mucous membrane contains indentations of the mucosa that sink into the muscle coat; these are the crypts of Luschka. The cystic duct is about 3 cm in length but variable. It s lumen is usually 1 -3 mm in diameter. The mucosa of the cystic duct is arranged in spiral folds known as the valves of Heister. Its wall is surrounded by a sphincteric structure called the sphincter of Lutkins.

The biliary system consists of the organs and ducts bile ducts, gallbladder, and associated structures that are involved in the production and transportation of bile. When the liver cells secrete bile, it is collected by a system of ducts that flow from the liver through the right and left hepatic ducts. The common hepatic duct then joins with the cystic duct from the gallbladder to form the common bile duct. This runs from the liver to the duodenum the first section of the small intestine.
Biliary System Anatomy and Functions
The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ that stores about 50 ml of the bile produced by the liver until the body needs it for digestion. It is about 7—10cm long in humans and is dark green in color. The gallbladder has a muscular wall that contracts in response to cholecystokinin, a peptide hormone that is synthesized by the small intestine. When food containing fat enters the digestive tract, the secretion of cholecystokinin CCK is stimulated, and the gallbladder releases the bile into the small intestine. The bile emulsifies fats and neutralizes acids in partly digested food.

Understand the role of the gallbladder in concentrating bile and coordinating its secretion with ingestion of a meal Describe the molecular mechanisms whereby bile is concentrated during storage Discuss the mechanism and significance of gallbladder secretion Understand how bile remains isoosmolar during concentration Explain how contraction of the gallbladder is regulated Explain why the gallbladder is vulnerable to the formation of cholesterol gallstones Describe the physiologic consequences of surgical removal of the gallbladder Understand the role of the sphincter of Oddi in regulating bile outflow into the intestine. The gallbladder serves to store and concentrate bile coming from the liver in the period between meals.
